The Presbyterian minister John Steel was born in Ireland in 1715. He emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1742, and associated with the New Side Presbytery of New Castle. Steel served a number of churches in central Pennsylvania and Maryland during the subsequent decade. At Upper West Conococheague Presbyterian Church (Mercersburg, Pa.), Steel fortified the church against raids by the Delaware Indians, and was chosen to lead the local militia. He founded First Presbyterian Church (Carlisle, Pa.) in 1759...
